KSPCA

Kenya Society for the Protection & Care of Animals.

🐕Did you know that petting dogs can lower your blood pressure? It’s a good thing. It means reduced stress levels.

I honestly don’t remember how we found this place. I used to hang out here most weekends at some point with a friend. She loved the animals, I loved the isolation. You can spend as much time as you like, during open hours, with the animals. Interact with them to the levels you’re comfortable with, there’s supervision for when you need it but autonomy as well, so it can be just you(and your friend) and the animals. The people there, volunteers, are really welcoming and friendly, so the environment’s good all around.

🐈Did you know(I did not) that the reason cats don’t like water is because their coats do not insulate them well enough?🤔

I went with an animal lover so I had a dope time. Exploring and learning the different animals. She was curious, an aspiring Vet, so we did almost everything. We packed lunch coz there are no eating joints nearby.

🐖Pigs, omnivorous (and surprisingly huge in real life😳) and highly intelligent animals with hardly any sweat glands, so why they love wallowing in mud is coz it’s one of the best ways for them to cool down. Now you understand, and can stop saying ‘You filthy animal.’

This post is, for the animal lovers. And anyone wanting to experience something like this. So what I know is, KSPCA is an animal welfare organization. Located in Karen, on that road for Hillcrest school. They run a shelter for animals that are abandoned, homeless, lost or victims of cruelty(you’ll know ’em when you see ’em). They provide for them care and a safe environment until they are either reclaimed or rehomed. Yes, you can adopt😀 They do a bunch of other stuff, educate, neuter, have a small library(one wall bookshelf really😅), sell pet stuff. Their website details this and more.

🐐Goats, they don’t graze they browse(wooden vegetation).

Their website may look fancy but they’re actually really humble. They run on donations so feel free to give to them. Even if it’s that 100bob as you enter their premises. How much fun you have depends on how many liberties you take, we took alot. It’s not like there are tour guides you know, so it’s a case of, you ask and you shall receive. If you don’t think to ask, you miss out😄

What animals are there: Dogs, whose sense of smell is 10,000 times stronger than humans’. Cats, who are often lactose intolerant btw, so we’re not advised to be giving them milk. Or raw fish, they go crazy over that only on TV. Yes people😂, come ready to learn. Donkeys, whose intelligence has made people see them as stubborn when really, that’s not the case. [We just don’t acknowledge animals as intelligent🤔] They’re capable of sensing something wrong while traveling, and when they do they will simply not move ahead and will start digging in their heels. Monkeys, who get aggressive when you touch them. 🐷Pigs & our fussy eaters, the Goats🐐 They have a space for Cattle🐄 as well. You’ll see the different breeds. You’ll see their homes, really well done. 😅OMG, so many cats, so many dogs, all looking to play, you just won’t get bored. You can also help the volunteers in their daily duties: feeding, cleaning, walking them. It’s a big space and it’s like the animals have personalities, the place is just so alive and yet peaceful, we both lived next to KSPCA so it made sense we were there alot. 😊I recommend visiting KSPCA or any other animal shelter [near you] and experiencing what it is they do.
